The Surfs-Up project consortium recently visited the VTT Bioruukki Pilot Centre for a highly inspirational field trip focused on advancing lignin valorisation technologies. This visit marked an important milestone in the project's journey toward developing sustainable, bio-based surfactants from renewable raw materials.
Hosted by the team at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the visit provided consortium members with a comprehensive tour of the Bioruukki facilities, a cutting-edge research and piloting environment for biobased and circular economy innovations. The focus of the visit was on lignin, a key feedstock in the SURFs-UP project and a promising building block for the next generation of green surfactants.
The consortium had the opportunity to observe pilot-scale equipment and processes specifically dedicated to the conversion of lignin into high-value products. These technologies represent a significant step toward replacing fossil-based ingredients in surfactants with renewable alternatives, contributing to a more sustainable and circular economy.
In addition to the technical tour, the visit included interactive sessions with VTT experts, allowing for fruitful exchanges of knowledge and experience.
