Exploring Sustainability and Economic Viability in the SURFs-Up Project

Espoo, Finland - 28th May 2025

The SURFs-Up consortium recently conducted an internal workshop dedicated to Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA). The session, held during the latest consortium meeting, was led by project partner Consorzio Italbiotec.

The workshop provided an opportunity for project partners to evaluate various feedstocks and technologies within SURFs-Up to determine which are most suitable for LCA and TEA simulations. The goal of this exercise was to prioritise the most promising technological combinations for further study, with a focus on long-term sustainability and economic feasibility.

By incorporating LCA and TEA methodologies, the consortium aims to ensure that the project’s innovations are not only technically advanced but also aligned with environmental and economic objectives. These assessments support evidence-based decision-making and strategic planning throughout the development process.

The contributions of Camila Charpentier Alfaro and Jorge Benavides were instrumental in guiding the workshop, offering expert insights that informed the evaluation process.

Workshops of this nature play a crucial role in directing the SURFs-Up project toward its mission of delivering sustainable, economically viable bio-based solutions with real-world impact.
